Memories of My Friend Terry Day
by Jay Simpson 72
I got to know Terry Day in the summer on 1971, just before the start of our senior
year at George Dewey High. My family had just moved from out in Olongapo, to
Finback Street in Kalayaan. Terry and his family had just returned from a visit to
the States and lived just down the street. Terry had brought back a ton of new
records from the States, we found that we had similar taste in music, an interest
in photography and a passion for riding motorcycles. Terry was an easy to get
along with, and had a great sense of humor and imagination. Terry was the type
of individual if he was your friend, he was your friend for life.
We spent hours riding our motor cycles around the base, with no specific
destination in mind. In the early 70’s dependents were not allowed to ride motor
cycles after dark, so we were frequently found riding around in Terry’s parents
1965 Ford Fairland station wagon. The car had an 8 Track tape player and the
added benefit of be able to carry extra people. We listened to a wide variety of
music, but the tape that got played the most was an album by the Who, “Who’s
Next”.
One on occasion Terry folded the back seat of the station wagon down and put a
mattress in the back of the car. It’s been over 40 years ago and I can’t remember
the thought that went into this decision, other than some obvious innuendo.
When Terry’s mother saw the mattress, she asked him what the mattress was for.
Terry got red in the face and was hesitant to answer. Mrs. Day looked him in the
face and told him to remove the mattress until he could tell her what it was for. I
think this was the only time ever I saw Terry embarrassed with nothing to say.
After all there are just some conversations that an 18 year old is not going to have
with his mother.
As graduation day grew closer, I we talked frequently about what the future
might hold for both of us. Terry was from eastern Virginia and talked of going
back to that area. I was from Charleston SC and ended up back there. I lost track
of Terry until sometime in late 1973 or early 1974, by this time I was married, and
Terry was attending college in the New Bern NC area. Terry’s family was still in
the Philippines and he was a frequent guest at our house, especially around the
holidays. We had a great time doing things that young adults do, even if we were
somewhat financially challenged. Over time visits became Christmas cards and
later e-mails, always with a commitment to get together soon. But as is often the
case, careers, family and life in general took precedent. In late August, I found
that my old friend had passed away. Forty plus years have passed since the class
of 72 spent time together at Subic Bay P.I. At times it seems like the early 70’s
were just yesterday and we should all still be 18. But in reality we are in our early
60’s. Many of us, like Terry are grandparents, approaching our retirement years.
There is an old saying “you can look back but you can’t go back”, and while this is
true, I know that anytime I think back to the early 70’s, my friend Terry Day will be
part that memory.

A Note from John Sullivan 71
This is news I pass on to everyone with a heavy heart that Denis McCann passed away from a stroke in Arizona. Denis lived next door to us on the mountain in Cubi when I was there in 1968-70. His dad was the oral surgeon at the base. Denis left Subic in 1969 and was one of the Jokers and he was senior Joker when I got into the club. Denis came to visit us in Maryland outside PAX River NAS back in the early 70’s. We connected on e-mail and kept in contact. I was hoping to see him again in person at some point. Denis was always a good guy. Our parents were very good friends and I saw them over the years when they came to visit in Maryland. This is truly sad news. I am so sorry to hear this.
