Fall 2007 in Bangor Maine
by Pene Forrest Southerland, GDHS 1962
It was a beautiful Columbus Day weekend when the Alumni of George Dewey
High School, Subic Bay, Philippines descended upon Bangor. Maine. We had been
planning this reunion for quite some time and we were all looking forward to it. It
would be a wonderful time for all to see the magnificence of the spectacular
colors of a New England fall.
Many of the Alumni arrived early so we all met at a local Chinese buffet and had a
wonderful dinner. The next evening, we started out with a get together cocktail
party and welcome dance with finger foods, meatballs and lots of jabbering.
There were many things from our past such as yearbooks, cheerleader outfits,
team swim suits and lots of scrapbook pictures decorating the room. Table
decorations were made by Gail Carter and Pam Griggs. There was a free breakfast
at the hotel where most of us stayed, so we once again congregated in the
morning before heading off on a bus trip (just like when we went to the games at
Baguio and Clark) to beautiful Bar Harbor. After returning from Bar Harbor we had
a spectacular surf and turf (all you could eat lobster and steak cooked to your
liking) meal at the Bangor Elks Club. Larry Taylor was the emcee for the program.
He presented each person with a certificate of attendance and there were lots of
memories shared as well as much laughing and joking remembering the fun times
we all shared while in Subic.
The next morning a bunch of us went to a local truck stop and had another great
breakfast with lots more laughter and stories after which, many folks left for their
respective homes. Several folks incorporated their vacation with this reunion and
did some traveling around the New England area before returning to their homes.
We were even fortunate enough to have two of our former teachers, Mrs.
Carrington and Mr. Reyes in attendance for the festivities. All in all, it was an
incredible experience for the 93 people that attended.
